The Smart Start Academy Hoboken daycare program employs the Creative Curriculum to engage young minds and provide new ways for kids to discover the world around them.
Our goal is to help your children build a strong foundation in learning as they begin their education.
In the modern world, there are a lot of distractions (especially digital distraction) that limit the opportunities kids have for developmental learning activities. More than that, a lot of these factors get in the way of a child’s ability to simply play and enjoy everyday experiences.
Studies are showing that these types of disruptions and distractions can negatively impact a child’s readiness for school, their healthy social adjustment, and many other important skills.
At Smart Start Academy in Hoboken, we use this curriculum and a variety of resources to provide some great hands-on, project-based learning in our daycare program.
What Is the Creative Curriculum?
This curriculum is a teaching and learning method developed by Teaching Strategies to be an effective way for children to apply skills in project-based investigations.
The program is focused on the “whole child” (more on this in a moment) and gives everyone a chance to work on four areas of development: cognitive, language, physical, and social/emotional.
The principles of the curriculum are simple and straightforward – and very important. They include:
- Positive interactions and relationships with adults
- Constructive and purposeful play that supports developmentally appropriate learning
- Social and emotional competence
- Maintaining a physical environment conducive to learning
- Building teacher-family partnerships to enhance the learning process
Combining daycare services with the Creative Curriculum at our Hoboken preschool will immerse your children in learning by using purposeful and play-based experiences. We use topics that kids interact with every day so they can find new ways to develop their skills in all four areas while building positive relationships with others.
Daycare for the Whole Child
Over the years, educational trends change. There was a time when it was felt that children would get a better start on their educational path if they were to focus on rote memorization and other math and literacy skills.
More recently, though, the studies show that social and emotional skills are just as important – and can actually influence the development of – physical and cognitive abilities.
Daycare programs should address the whole child – their academic, social/emotional, and physical needs. This way, research says, children can better prepare for their time in the classroom because it encourages more flexibility for the learner and more interest in learning.
There are several possible reasons for this, but the simplest explanation is that when kids learn social skills (usually through playing), they are naturally picking up better listening skills, a longer attention span, and the ability to use words to communicate their needs.
Project-Based Learning and Playing
In an article called, “The Power of Play” in The Official Journal of the American Academy of Pediatrics, they state:
“Research demonstrates that developmentally appropriate play with parents and peers is a singular opportunity to promote the social-emotional, cognitive, language, and self-regulation skills that build executive function and a prosocial brain.”
This is a very academic way to say that playing – to children – is not just a frivolous waste of time. It promotes and enhances brain structure and function and builds their learning abilities while teaching them to go after goals and stick to it despite distractions.
Playing can help kids think creatively, discover their limitations and how to overcome them, and how to get along with others while following or even making rules.
At our Hoboken Daycare, we apply these principles through a project-based learning model.
In other words, instead of drilling and testing children, we create opportunities for them to discover their own world through investigations into real-world situations. This gives them the best opportunities to exercise their creative thinking and problem-solving skills while increasing their ability to observe and listen at the same time.
The Goals of Our Daycare in Hoboken Program
At Smart Start Academy in Hoboken, our overriding goal is to help every child explore their world, investigate their discoveries, and prepare for the future.
We provide the hands-on projects that actually relate to a child’s daily life and encourage them develop skills for all four developmental aspects.
To that end, we always tailor our lessons to fit the individual developmental needs of children at different ages.
We want to make sure every child has the opportunity to learn in their own way, and our teachers are trained to use the Creative Curriculum to constantly engage the kids and help them learn through structured and free-play activities.
